HISTORIC NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA
|
 |
Founded in 1855 by
John W. North, Northfield cleverly combines history, art, culture, education,
commercial industry, Minnesota-countryside and hometown friendliness creating
a prosperous, thriving community. Attractions include the historic downtown district
built over a century ago with dining, shopping, and a river walkway along the
Cannon River and falls. Two nationally-ranked colleges, Carlton College and St.
Olaf College, contribute to Northfield's appeal. |
| |
| Within Carleton's 900-acre campus are two scenic lakes,
a unique Japanese garden and a 400-acre arboretum which are open to the public.
Northfield is perhaps best known for the dramatic 1876 bank raid on the First
National Bank by the notorious outlaw Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang.
The town's defeat of the gang's robbery attempt proved to be the beginning of
the end of Jesse's infamous career. That heroism is celebrated each year in
September
with the Defeat of Jesse James Days and re-enactments of the raid. |
